*NEW SECURITY ACT GIVES MILLIONS TO COLLEGE STUDENTS, CENTERS
By SWD Staff
Congress this week approved a massive spending program that provides
almost $1 billion for computer security research, including new university
security centers and scholarships to recruit students to the field. The
Cyber Security Research and Development Act (CSRDA) now goes to President
Bush to sign.

Once law, the U.S. government will provide $275 million for post-doctoral
and senior research fellowships in work "related to the security of
computer systems" during the next five years. Another $233 million goes to
research grants in nine security-related areas, including cryptography,
privacy, wireless security and computer forensics.

Also, $144 million will create campus Computer and Network Security
Research Centers to promote security research, while $95 million in
college grants will establish or improve undergraduate and graduate
programs in computer and network security.

Another $32 million in research is slated to improve network security and
pay for "multidisciplinary, long-term, high-risk research on ways to
improve the security of computer systems."
