The Town of Salem Developers Are Looking Into This Data Breach

Over 7 million accounts for the web browser & mobile roleplaying game
Town of Salemhave been reportedly breached, according to a Tuesday
report on DeHashed.

“The data affected, includes but is not limited to: usernames, emails,
passwords (phpass, MD5(WordPress), MD5(phpBB3)), IP addresses, game &
forum activity, & payment information,” their report read. “With some
of the users who paid for certain premium features having their
billing information/data breached as well.”

A Town of Salem developer on the game’s official forum apologized on
Wednesday for the massive data breach and said that the development
studio, Blank Media Games, will work towards resolving this issue.

“The BMG staff is just coming back from Christmas/New years vacation
and we were informed that there may have been a breach of our
database,” the developer wrote. “I am currently in contact with
Rackspace to figure out what happened and prevent it from happening
again. You should update your Town of Salem passwords to be safe.”

The developer also said that Blank Media Games doesn’t “store any
credit card or payment info” and that all user passwords were “hashed
and not plain text” but they advised changing passwords if users were
still worried.

“Sorry that this happened, no game creator ever wants to be in this
situation and having it happen over the holiday break when everyone
was away was terrible timing,” the developer added.
