A former Auckland Council employee has been charged with stealing
credit card details from ratepayers and going on a spending spree.

Chantavee Jean-Paul Samountry, 39, appeared on Wednesday in the
Auckland District Court, where he faced six charges of stealing the
credit card numbers from Auckland Council customers.

Samountry, originally from Laos, allegedly stole the credit card
numbers of 95 customers on 227 occasions to make online purchases from
2degrees and Vodafone between December 2010 and June 2011.

The alleged thefts amounted to $47,048.

Auckland Council spokesman Glyn Walters confirmed Samountry was a
former employee who was stood down by the organisation on April 12,
2011.

He said the incident was isolated.

"Auckland ratepayers can have full confidence in the council's
financial systems," he said.

"Our financial processes are regularly audited and reviewed under our
risk and assurance programme, which includes an external audit by
Audit New Zealand.

"Auckland Council takes matters of alleged fraud and theft very
seriously and refers to matters of this nature to the police."

The council would not comment further because the matter is before the courts.
