Manuel "Trey" Chaney III was sentenced to 70 months in prison, according to US Attorney Joyce White Vance. Chaney, a former service representative at the Bessemer Social Security Administration office, was accused of a scheme valuing $325,000 in fraudulent transactions. Between January and November 2010, Vance writes, Chaney used SSA records to identify recently deceased residents of the southeastern United States who were collecting social security benefits via direct deposit to Wachovia/Wells Fargo banks, where Chaney maintained his personal bank account. Chaney accessed these accounts and used them to make online payments for his vehicles, utility bills and credit cards, one of which had been used to purchase furniture for Chaney's new home. The recipients of fraudulent money were Alabama Power, Capital One Bank, Citibank, Discover Card, GE Money Bank, GMAC/Ally Bank, HSBC Bank, JP Morgan Chase Bank and T-Mobile. Chaney was ordered to pay $40,857 in restitution to the victims, and must forfeit $175,559 in proceeds of his crime to the government. _______________________________________________ Dataloss Mailing List (dataloss () datalossdb org) Archived at http://seclists.org/dataloss/ Unsubscribe at http://datalossdb.org/mailing_list Supporters: Risk Based Security (http://www.riskbasedsecurity.com/) Risk Based Security equips organizations with security intelligence, risk management services and on-demand security solutions to establish customized risk-based programs to address information security and compliance challenges.
