Identity theft high in Maryland

Despite years of warnings and educational outreach efforts, we remain
too willing, all too often, to give up our personal information or
make it easily accessible to those who would steal our identities and,
often, our life savings.

Maryland ranked third in the nation for incidents of fraud, identity
theft and other complaints filed with the Federal Trade Commission in
2010, according to statistics from that agency.

According to the agency, Maryland reported 23,581 incidents of fraud
and 4,784 incidents of identity theft last year. And those numbers,
the agency notes, are probably lower than the total number that
actually occurred since many likely go unreported.
