Sierra Madre police officers have taken over 175 fraud reports linked
to EVG Quality Gas station in recent days, officials said Monday.
The first victim reported identity theft on Dec. 27 after using her
credit card at the 50 S. Baldwin Avenue gas station, which has been
closed since Christmas weekend, according to a police news release.

The total loss reported exceeds $49,000 and does not include others
who have been victimized and have not made a formal report to the
police department. The highest loss reported by a customer was $3,782,
the release said.

About 75 percent of the cases involved a single fraudulent transaction
--- all of which were less than $200. Sierra Madre residents make up
more than 80 percent of the victims.

Detectives have followed leads in this case daily and the department
is working with several law enforcement and regulatory agencies that
are providing additional resources, the statement said.

Anyone who has used a credit or debit card at EVG is being asked to
check their statements back to at least June of 2010. If there has
been a fraudulent charge from EVG Inc, victims should report it to the
police department.
