http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/local_news/BAMC_No_identity_theft_after_records_breach.html Brooke Army Medical Center said Wednesday that information in a binder stolen last fall that contained records for 1,272 patients hasn't led to any cases of identity theft. BAMC spokesman Dewey Mitchell also said no one knows for sure what was in the binder stolen from a case manager's car on Oct. 16. The hospital said the three-ring binder may have contained names, home addresses, home telephone numbers and patient health information on soldiers and families. “We don't have any copy of this, and it's all handwritten notes by case managers. They log in, get a book, take notes and write information,” he said. “The likelihood that there is some private health information is pretty high, but is there private health information on 1,200 people? No,” he said, adding that the number could range from a dozen people to 500. “There's no way of knowing because we don't have that book anymore and there is no duplicate.” The binder was stolen during a break-in at Rivercenter garage. San Antonio police recovered and returned some of the items taken from the car, but the binder hasn't been found. The theft was immediately reported to local police and Defense Department law enforcement, and patients were told Oct. 27. BAMC has said it was unlikely that any information was “used for any unlawful purpose.” [..] _______________________________________________ Dataloss Mailing List (dataloss () datalossdb org) Archived at http://seclists.org/dataloss/ Get business, compliance, IT and security staff on the same page with CREDANT Technologies: The Shortcut Guide to Understanding Data Protection from Four Critical Perspectives.
