The study is an analysis of 4 years of data security breaches from 2005 
through 2008. There were 500+ cases that were analyzed as part of this 
study.

In other words, the 500+ cases that are part of this study are the ones 
that their risk team have specifically taken an active role in the 
investigation in some way. As a result, the statistics are very 
different from other data breach information and studies that have been 
done. This information is still quite valuable, however, you need to 
take it with a grain of salt.
