I was talking with a history buff who introduced me to the idea
of alternative histories, something that apparently has some
largish number of devotees.  See

In any case, removing one individual from the scene is the basis
for several of them.  My history buff friend was trying to imagine
the smallest possible change with largest possible outcome; his
candidate was if Hitler had been born a girl.
