You know, that's what I thought in 1998 when I created the first network IPS, 
which is why I created a host version as well as a network version.

Yet, here we are 13 years later. Networks are still unencrypted, and massively 
multicore machines are pretty cheap. You can get a 24core AMD system for around 
$3000 that can keep up with giant pipes. My 6core desktop running my deep packet 
inspection code easily keeps up with 10gbps.

In the long run, the network won't be the right place to be. But, as John 
Maynard Keynes said, in the long run, we'll all be dead. In the short run, deep 
packet inspection is enormously useful.

So RSA paid lots and lots of money for NetWitness, as I'm sure everyone on this 
list
knows. But let's be straight: NetWitness would not have helped RSA when they got
owned by a professional team (as they just did, and I believe about 1% of what 
they
are saying about this attack on their blog - as should you).

So where is the value in NetWitness? Obviously, if you want to suck data off the
network and analyse it, NetWitness is your go-to-guy. But the network is always 
the
wrong place to be, especially the giant pipes at the door to your network.
