I was unable to produce totally similar results on Solaris 7:

uname -r
5.7
set ORACLE_HOME=`perl -e 'print "A"x747'`
/opt/oracle/product/8.1.5/bin/dbsnmp
couldn't read file "/config/nmiconf.tcl": no such file or directory
Failed to initialize nl component,error=462
Failed to initialize nl component,error=462


No segfault though.
