as soon as possible.  Hewlett-Packard Company will not be liable for any
consequences to any customer resulting from customer's failure to fully
implement instructions in this Security Bulletin as soon as possible.

PROBLEM:  /opt/audio/bin/Aserver can be used to gain root access.

PLATFORM: HP9000 Series 7/800 running HP-UX releases 10.X and 11.X

DAMAGE:   Root access is possible.

SOLUTION: Apply the AudioSubsystem patch:
          For HP9000 servers running HP-UX 11.00:   PHSS_21663
                                     HP-UX 10.XX:   PHSS_21662

AVAILABILITY:  The patches are available.

CHANGE SUMMARY: Revision 01 initial release
                Revision 02 contains revised permission recommendations.
                Revision 03 contains patch recommendations.

   A. Background
      A procedure to use /opt/audio/bin/Aserver to gain root access
      has been made public.

   B. Recommended solution
      Patches for fixing the problem have been released and are now
      available.

          For HP9000 servers running HP-UX 11.00:   PHSS_21663
                                     HP-UX 10.XX:   PHSS_21662

  C. To subscribe to automatically receive future NEW HP Security
     Bulletins from the HP IT Resource Center via electronic mail,
     do the following:

     Use your browser to get to the HP IT Resource Center page
     at:

     Under the Maintenance and Support Menu (Electronic Support Center):
     click on the "more..." link.  Then -

     Use the 'Login' tab at the left side of the screen to login
     using your ID and password.  Check with your system
     administrator to see if you have an existing login or use
     the "Register" button at the left to create a login.  You will
     need to login in order to gain access to many areas of the ITRC.
     Remember to save the User ID assigned to you, and your password.

     link.  Under the "Notifications" section (near the bottom of

PROBLEM:  MC/ServiceGuard file and directory permissions are incorrect.

PLATFORM: HP9000 Servers running HP-UX release 11.00 and 11.11, with
          MC/ServiceGuard Version A.11.09, A.11.08, A.11.07, and
          A.11.05 only.

DAMAGE:   Potential Denial of Service (DoS).

SOLUTION: Apply the patch listed below.
             HP-UX release 11.00:                  PHSS_22540
             HP-UX release 11.11:                  PHSS_22540

AVAILABILITY: The patch is available now.

 A. Background
    Hewlett-Packard Company has been notified of a vulnerability
    in its MC/ServiceGuard versions A.11.0X shipped on the HP-UX 11.00
    Application Release media dated February 1999 through September
    2000, inclusive.  The affected versions are A.11.09, A.11.08,
    A.11.07 and A.11.05 only.  This does not affect the ServiceGuard
    OPS Edition software.

 B. Fixing the problem:
    Application of the patch listed below will clear the problem.
    A system reboot is NOT required.

    NOTE: If your installation is running an earlier release of
          MC/ServiceGuard, please upgrade to MC/ServiceGuard
          Version A.11.09 BEFORE applying the patch.

          To verify your release run:
               what /usr/lbin/cmcld | grep A.11.*

     For HP-UX release 11.00 and 11.11 apply patch PHSS_22540.
