      Title: Sec. Vulnerability in BIND

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
        HEWLETT-PACKARD SECURITY BULLETIN: #00114, 16 May 2000
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

The information in the following Security Bulletin should be acted upon
as soon as possible. Hewlett Packard will not be liable for any
consequences to any customer resulting from customer's failure to fully
implement instructions in this Security Bulletin as soon as possible.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

PROBLEM: Security vulnerability in the BIND executable

PLATFORM: HP9000 Series 700/800 running HP-UX releases 10.XX & 11.XX.

DAMAGE: May allow remote users to gain root access or to disrupt
normal operation on the name server.

SOLUTION: Install patches (below) which upgrade BIND to version 4.9.7,
          or upgrade to version 8.1.2.

AVAILABILITY: All patches are available now.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
I.
   A. Background
The CERT advisory (CA-99-14) detailed several BIND vulnerabilities.
The Berkeley Internet Name Domain (BIND) is an implementation of
the Domain Name System (DNS) protocols. Complete details can be
      found at:
      ftp://info.cert.org/pub/cert_advisories/CA-99-14-bind.txt

   B. Recommended solution
Apply the appropriate patches for BIND components noted below.

  s700_800 HP-UX release 10.01, 10.10 & 10.20 BIND 4.9.7 PHNE_20618
  s700_800 HP-UX release 10.24 (VVOS) BIND 4.9.7 PHNE_21288
  s700_800 HP-UX release 11.00 BIND 4.9.7 PHNE_20619
  s700_800 HP-UX release 11.04 (VVOS) BIND 4.9.7 PHNE_21090

The bind revision 8.1.2 upgrade is available for HP-UX 11.00 via
      a web page:
      http://www.software.hp.com/products/DNS_BIND/index.html

Registration for the download is necessary, once done, there is
a link for installation instructions underneath the download
      button.

You have the an option of staying with bind 4.X or moving to
bind 8.X. The security holes mentioned in CERT advisory CA-99-14
have been fixed in both versions. Bind 8.X provides many
additional features. This is the latest version featuring full
support for negative caching (RFC2308) the clarifications in
RFC 2181, DNS security extensions in RFC 2065, multiple virtual
name servers, split DNS via "forward" zones, and general
enhancements. Please reference the web page above for full
      details.

NOTE: There are some migration issues that need to be addressed,
but scripts are available which can ease the transition.
