I have also heard that the hardware password (and all the other ROM
settings) will get wiped if you remove the battery for a while, but I
haven't tried it.(Haven't had the need... :>)
Does anyone know?


It is true. Even if it is not true u can make it with a short grounded wire
But If There is physical access AND a good knoeledge basis everything
can be done. 

I have heard that HPs have a backdoor not for passwords but when actually booting. It may not be true.
I am feeling that with physical access and lot of time u can break root
