That sounds more as if he is just using an alternate number or a temporary number, such as google voice. If he was 
"spoofing" the number the return texts would be routed to the spoofed number, not his phone. Just as spoofing an IP 
only works one way. 

To answer your question though, yes you can find the number it is forwarding to, but it's probably going to require a 
subpoena or two. Good luck. 

If there is another way, I'd like to know too.

this person is receiving texts back because they answer.  Is there a way
to find out the "real" number?
