You can use MSN or Yahoo in a more secure capacity by employing an encryption 
tool such as SIMP from Secway 
(http://www.secway.fr/us/products/simplite_msn/home.php).  You just need to make 
sure the person on the other end is also using SIMP.

clients/protocols and what they offer/support.
