Why is that?

 nmap -sP -PE -R -v -v microsoft.com ebay.com yahoo.com google.com slashdot.org
Warning:  You are not root -- using TCP pingscan rather than ICMP

-- So NMAP needs root privileges it seems to run the ICMP ECHO scan -
at least on my Mac.
