First, understand the protocols. I know the lines are being blurred by
different programs using port 80 for everything but knowledge of the
protocols and knowing what should be expected from different ports is
a must.

Also, learn how to read output from TCPDump. Working with TCPDump
gvies a very low-level look at that network traffic. This will give
you a better understanding of what you see in the output from an
ids/ips solution.

Finally, a little bit of programming knowledge. Learn how to recognize
different kings of code. You don't have to know everything about php
but do learn a little of the structure and learn where to go to get
more in-depth info.
