It really does depend on your privacy requirments. Alternatives to
consider would be renting a socks proxy service. You setup the proxy
service in windows and then configure additional applications as
required. Keep in mind that not all applications are socks capable. I
would have less reservation running gmail in outlook at a hotspot as
it uses authentication for smtp and pop and the connection is over
ssl. On the downside a compromised router with dodgy dns or a naughty
proxy can convince outlook its tal
