Obviously Steve knows his network deployment better than I do, but it's likely that it wouldn't work for his setup. 
Unfortunately for Winbind it's still in the NT domain "age" and it doesn't seem to be capable of handling Kerberos 
authentication, which is the main authentication mode for Windows 2000 domains.
