Fireproof vaults aren't. They're rated for how many hours a given kind of media can survive in them while a fire rages outside, and it's typically in the single digits. Better than nothing, but not as good as a 9-mile separation. Of course, 90 miles is probably better, depending on the local geography. (90 miles along the same major fault line or same hurricane-prone coastline is probably insufficient.) David Gillett

They currently use offsite storage by swapping tapes between their two buildings which are only 15km (9 miles) apart. Is that enough? How is that any safer than a good fireproof vault? -WereTiger -------------------------------------------------------------- ------------- EARN A MASTER OF SCIENCE IN INFORMATION ASSURANCE - ONLINE The Norwich University program offers unparalleled Infosec management education and the case study affords you unmatched consulting experience.
