The problem the OP is describing is a quirk of Backup Exec. We see the same problem when a user is disabled in exchange, and BE tries to back it up. Fabrice had the correct workaround. -----Original Message----- From: Joe DeMarco [mailto:demarcoj () comcast net] Sent: Friday, July 14, 2006 12:20 PM To: security-basics () securityfocus com Subject: RE: Backup Errors Rolando, First off, You are correct that a user profile should be immediately disabled. My experience has shown me not to delete it until you are sure no files are needed. Secondly, your backup should not fail because of a disabled account. It will however fail if you have deleted the account but not purged it from Exchange 2003 system manager Joseph DeMarco www.thefirestore.com IT Supervisor -----Original Message----- From: Fabrice La Farina [mailto:fabrice.lafarina () ifeip ch] Sent: Thursday, July 13, 2006 4:39 PM To: security-basics () securityfocus com Subject: RE: Backup Errors Hi Rolando You can purge the mailbox in the Exchange System Manager or unselect the mailbox in the Backup Job. Most recently I've been confronted with a problem that our backup operator is having with Backup Exec 9.X, 10.X when backing up Exchange Server 2003. The error is "Directory not found. Cannot backup directory. <directoryname> and its subdirectories. We have discovered that this is caused because the account associated with the mailbox is disabled or deleted. My argument is that if a user is terminated or leaves the company, that account should be immediately disabled. Are there any work-around solutions that can aid in satisfying the backup needs without compromising security? Can VSS solve this issue? ________________________________ Rolando Ruiz -------------------------------------------------------------- ------------- This list is sponsored by: SensePost Hacking, like any art, will take years of dedicated study and practice to master.
