Why not booting with the Knoppix CD and making a chroot to the /

filesystem?

Booting the Knoppix CD
mkdir /mnt/disk
chown /mnt/disk /bin/bash


That should probably be the 'chroot' referred to above, rather than
'chown'

and change the password
