Have you investigated a procedure called 'forklifting' the Exchange 
databases?

When I worked for the dark-side administrating NT and Exchange 5.5 
boxes, we had ALOT of problems. Had to to alot of forklifting, as well 
as running some utilities that repair corruption in the databases, etc. 
I can't remember what the utilities are called but they took A LONG time 
to run.

Also, there is NO GUARANTEE that it will work. MS won't offer you one, 
you're doing this at your own risk. At least 1/3 of the time when we 
attempted the procedure, it failed. Of course, we were way past 
recommended sizes for the info stores, but that wasn't by my choice...
