RE: Security Job Tracks? .

Hello all,
just want to have your advice.

I am too in almost the same situation as Ben. I want to know where to
start. I hold actually the CCNP as only certificate with Specialization
in cisco wireless. Actually a in the engineering section of a company in
my country. The problem is, there is not enough hands on in security on
this little island where I live. 

So, where can I apply for such start/fresher jobs which can help build a
career in IT/security?  I did some application online but never received
a response due to the fact that I stay overseas. Does it exist any such
organization that recruits juniors from overseas, with such goals as
mine?

I have less than 4 yrs experience with little hands on. Sure I would
learn fast and take as much certifications as I can.

Your first move would be to use a good spell-checker on your resume and
cover-letter. ;)

Secondly, I assume you're finishing up a degree (most likely in IT), but
getting a couple of certs would help as well.  

As for getting into the security arena, I have found the Security+ cert
that
I hold to be the most "door-opening" cert that I have achieved thus far.


Finally, don't expect to make the big bucks right out of the gate.  I
took
my first IT admin job several years ago making $1600.00 a month, barely
enough to get by on, but I learned a lot by getting some "real-world,
hands-on experience", the kind you don't really get in classes and labs.


Now many years later I am making a nice salary and living comfortably.
So
don't be afraid to take less pay for more work; get in there and get
your
hands dirty, learn all you can, and have some fun doing it.  I think
it'll
pay off nicely for you in the end.

While hoping that this message is appropriate, and that others like me
are reading this, I am asking a small favor of all of the "experts"
and 'professionals" here.  As of late, with my graduation just a few
months away, I am experiencing a bit of anxiety.  I have been reading
books, writing code, etc...for a number of years, not really thinking
about what I am going to do with all of this information.  Alas, I
have reached a point where I must look for that first real job.  To
all of you looking back at this experience and the path to your
present job, where dud you start out and what kind of jobs and
opportunities did you look for?  It seems like a majority of the
security jobs are left to people with several years of experience, and
rightly so, but where does one begin to obtain this experience in
order to move up the ladder?

Also, there are so many topics in the security arena.  All of them
seem to be interrelated in one way or another, but there is so much
information.  I am quite interested in the majority of them, but
obviously cannot be an expert on them all.  How does one narrow down
the topics and focus on the few that will either carry the most weight
while looking for employment or provide the most benefit to a young
security amateur like myself?
