You should be able to handle the user explination.  Email is just like
paper mail.  It is designed must like the postal system.  It just so
happens most of the time the speed involved makes it look like IM.

Explain that email is just like paper mail, then explain how this
would happen with paper mail.  Usually people grasp paper mail better
because they have actually wrote a letter (with headers) and filled
out an evelope, and dropped it off at the post office (the email
server).
