do this:

[root@unixbox user]# telnet "URL or IP of mail server" 25
Trying "ip of the mail server"...
Connected to "URL or IP of mail server"
Escape character is '^]'.
220 "URL or IP of mail server" ESMTP Server (Mail Server Banner....) ready
mail from: me () anything com
250 OK - mail from <me () anything com>
rcpt to: anyone () anyone com
550 Relaying is prohibited

if you see:

550 Relaying is prohibited....

You are safe :)
