It seems this may be able to be done.  Do a search for "Ethernet AUI
Sniffer".  What that amounts to is disabling the transmit portion of 
an AUI port.  Sounds like you'll need a transceiver to convert from 
ethernet to aui though.  Good luck.

  I think that's what the pin 1&2 loopbacks are for -- some equipment 
wants to see signals there in order to see the link as connected.
  In the AUI case, though, that gets done in the transceiver, and so
the transmit connection on the AUI side can just be cut.
