No default interface. How about on a single-interface system? Maybe Wireshark should at least select the only listed interface as the default on a single-interface system. That IS going to be the interface that the user selects before >each capture.Correct. But is there a system with only a single interface? All the systems I use have a loopback interface and at least one more... Since I'm not using Solaris, I can always capture on two interfaces at least. Are >there systems out there with only a single interface? On windows(?).
Possibly (not using Windows)...
BTW even if I have a default interface in my preferences on Windows I can't just start the trace "No interface selected" ...
... which is fixed by Irene in http://anonsvn.wireshark.org/viewvc/viewvc.cgi?view=rev&revision=48788 Actually not, in my preference file the IF is stored as capture.device: Intel(R) 82579LM Gigabit Network Connection: \Device\NPF_{17E2B597-9C79-4B08-9836-E83D0B3E1064} And the comparison is done against "\Device\NPF_{17E2B597-9C79-4B08-9836-E83D0B3E1064}" Best regards Michael
On a multiple interface system, I can see the logic of either method--either selecting the first interface or selecting no interface if the user has not specified a default. Neither method is clearly superior and the choice of which should be implemented is a matter of opinion.OK.
