Re: Wireshark 1.0.14 is now available

There is another reason to use WS 1.0. I, for one, do not intend to
purchase any more MS software. This outdated OS meets most of our
Windows needs (testing, etc) in this hetero environment. So please
realize that some of us don't want the latest and greatest Windows OS.
And thanks for everything. WS is wonderful!

Along with older system support there are a few other cases where you
might use Wireshark 1.0:

  - Your organization's software approval process is so strict and
baroque that 1.2.x hasn't made the list yet. I know of at least
    one organization still using 0.99.6a.

  - You're a Linux distribution that packages 1.0 with a long term
support release (such as Debian or Ubuntu).

  - You've integrated Wireshark with other software which isn't
    compatible with 1.2.

  - That blog post you read said to use 1.0.3 and you'll be damned
if you're going to use some newfangled 1.2.9 piece of junk.

In any case the 1.0 branch will be partially or fully retired when 1.4.0
is released, depending on the needs of downstream Linux distributions.

It supports some older systems not supported by 1.2. For example, the
1.0 versions are the last versions that can work with GTK 1. I think it
may also be the last version that runs on Windows 98(?).

What is this "old stable" release for, anyway? I can't find anything
online explaining its purpose.

Getting Wireshark

Wireshark source code and installation packages are available from
   http://www.wireshark.org/download.html.

  Vendor-supplied Packages

Most Linux and Unix vendors supply their own Wireshark packages.
You can usually install or upgrade Wireshark using the package
management system specific to that platform. A list of third-party
packages can be found on the download page on the Wireshark web
   site.

File Locations

Wireshark and TShark look in several different locations for
preference files, plugins, SNMP MIBS, and RADIUS dictionaries.
These locations vary from platform to platform. You can use
About->Folders to find the default locations on your system.

Known Problems

Wireshark may appear offscreen on multi-monitor Windows systems.
   (Bug 553)

Wireshark might make your system disassociate from a wireless
network on OS X. (Bug 1315)

Dumpcap might not quit if Wireshark or TShark crashes. (Bug 1419)

The BER dissector might infinitely loop. (Bug 1516)

Wireshark can't dynamically update the packet list. This means
that host name resolutions above a certain response time threshold
won't show up in the packet list. (Bug 1605)

Capture filters aren't applied when capturing from named pipes.
   (Bug 1814)

Wireshark might freeze when reading from a pipe. (Bug 2082)

Capturing from named pipes might be delayed on Windows. (Bug 2200)

Filtering tshark captures with display filters (-R) no longer
   works. (Bug 2234)
