I'll agree and disagree with you.. If scaled to applicable dimensions, telnetting to any number of routers over 100, seems a bit tedious. Even utilizing scripting language like Expect, TCL or TCL/Tk or any other interactive scripts but one still needs to have a password at that level. IMO, the optimized calibration for the network solution, scaled to applicable dimensions, is not a subset of MIB. Optimization lies at the intersection of system-provided resource, and user-based expertise. Any points independent of this curve, such as programming aspects in and of themselves, deny the very premise of this thread! Otherwise, I would totally, whole-heartedly agree.
