In  the X suite there is a program named xwininfo that gives you a lot
of information about a X server,if it is open.

For example:
xwininfo -root -all -display host:dispnum
will give you a lot of information about the X server, if it is open.
For  more option and information : man xwininfo (in xfree you can find
the source code).
I  think  also in  the program satan (and probably in saint and sara)
there is a "module" to test if a Xserver is open.
