I've been using a program called Winsock Spy for this purpose quite a while.
It's a simple .dll that logs activities before letting wsock32.dll do the job.
I don't know if it has a homepage or if a new version has arrived but you
should be able to find it on the net. From the doc:

WSOCK32 Winsock Spy Facility
Version .91 By Walt Howard

WSOCK32.DLL is a dll that "slips between" your 32 bit, WINDOWS 95
application and the REAL WSOCK32.DLL. WSOCK32.DLL spy intercepts the
calls to Winsock and outputs trace information that tells you each
WINSOCK call made and some relevant information about it.
