What would be required to request a DLT for a proprietary format?
If "proprietary" means "to be kept private to your organization", and you can't just use one of the DLT_USERn values for it, just ask for it and give a name. That's one of the purposes of the DLT_USERn values, so if you can use them, that's preferable, but there are already proprietary-in-that-sense DLT_ values, so.... If "proprietary" means "our organization created it but will, for example, contribute code to tcpdump and/or Wireshark and/or... to dissect it", so that it's privately-defined but publicly-documented, supply a description of the format of the link-layer headers. - This is the tcpdump-workers list.
