Upgrading Snort is the way to go. 2.9.8.3 was released over 4 years ago. We’ve released at least 6 versions of Snort
since then. We only haven’t EOL’ed 2.9.8.3 because of a single hardware platform that hasn’t moved off of it yet. We
are planning on EOL’ing it this fall, however.

I suggest anyone on 2.9.8.3 upgrade to the latest version now. Don’t wait. One day it will be gone.

Talos released about 5 new rules for the most recent Microsoft vulnerability CVE-2020-1350. However these rules were
not updated for Snort version 2.9.8.3 and they are present for 2.9.9.0 and up.

I think the reason is that these rules use the bitmask feature in the byte_test, which is not available on 2.9.8.3.

Is there an alternative for this? Or upgrading Snort is the only option?

Thanks,
