I've used Endace, Napatech and CSPi (was Myricom) cards. The Endace cards are very good, but as you say, not cheap. Napatech cover the most media types, but are also not cheap. CSPi cards are very reasonably priced by comparison and, in my experience, are more flexible once you get used to them.
