Hello all,

Hope everyone has had a good easter off, I cam back into work today hoping
that I would be able to say that now the rules are updated that my problem
of snort hanging has gone away and that to recreate the problem try running
snort with mismatched sid-msg.map to snort.rules from pulledpork.....
 however when I got back in today and I saw the U2 file hadnt been updated
in 2 days I knew my demons were still with me.

It seems almost certain that something inside snort is writing to an
unideal memory space and slowly using up snorts mem resource to the point
where it freezes up, again it refuses to be killed off with pkill or a
kill, --> it simply does not catch the kill-signal.. in fact Ubuntu knows
that snort is still running after an attempted kill as you can tab it up
and it will recognise snort as a running process.... my only method here is
to reboot the VM every (11 days this time), which as you can imagine, is
very unideal,

From another system I can look at the traffic signature at the time of
snorts last write to U2.. interestingly (and it was easter to allow this
could occur), contrary to my last observations, snort has not frozen up at
a time of high-level traffic where in the past it has, in fact the last U2
write was at a time of relatively extremely low traffic, this leads me to
believe that it freezes up based on an eventual overload of a finite memory
store as opposed to not being able to handle high-loads of traffic.

even more interestingly, I have an identical (as it is a VM) snort instance
running in a different environment, much less traffic yes, but based on my
above theory the finite resource should eventually be depleted ... the only
difference between the two is the threshold - in the snort that freezes up
I have the following thresholds

 …..I have no log output that I am aware of → /var/log/snort only has my
alert and U2 files for barnyard to deal with

 as you can see im not using the SO Rules and am supressing HTTP Inspect
and S5 -> would like to learn how to use the SO rules properly in future,
but for now would like for snort to run without hanging for a week or more
:-)

 also I am using pulledpork - hence the one snort.rules file in addition
to local.rules

As long as the rules are up and processing – this is a new build, company
was running an old version and I took over and updated it.
