Snort error

I am getting this error message when I am running Snort. Can you please
help me fix this problem.

ERROR: /etc/snort/rules/smtp.rules(22) Undefined variable in the string:
$HOME_NET

It seems like smtp.rules is not able to read the HOME_NET value that I've
set in snort.conf file.
Same error with the EXTERNAL_NET settings.
