Cannot make default /usr/lib/snort_dynamicpreprocessor into ...lib64...

When building Snort 2.9.5.5 on CentOS x86_64 (64-bit platform), one would think that libraries go into the /usr/lib64 
(assuming that ./configure --prefix=/usr)...

But, I am getting /usr/lib/snort_dynamicpreprocessor instead of the desired /usr/lib64/snort_dynamicpreprocessor.

What is the best way for Snort make to use the /usr/lib64 directory?


Command used:
  ./configure --sysconfdir=/etc --prefix=/usr --libdir=/usr/lib64 CFLAGS="-O0 -g3 -Wall -Werror -ggdb" 
CPPFLAGS="-DDEBUG -DDEBUG_MSGS" --libexecdir=/usr/lib64/snort_dynamicpreprocessor 
LIBS="-L/usr/lib64/snort_dynamicpreprocessor"
