Issue related to Blacklists

Hi,

I am getting errors for BLACKLIST rules.

With reference to the discussion thread - http://seclists.org/snort/2013/q3/246, on this discussion thread it has been
advised that there is a clash between the plain text blacklist rules and the one used for reputation processor
blacklist rules if we have files with same name. But in my case if all the rules are placed in one single file. Also on
this thread it has been said that it may happen due to incorrect IP configuration. Below are details of my Snort setup.

CentOS Kernel version 2.6.32-358.14.1.el6.x86_64

Snort version 2.9.5 GRE (Build 103)

Barnyard version: 2.1.9 (Build 263) - XFF patch (version 2)

Rules are updated using pulledpork (version 0.7.0)

Note: Rules are downloaded and placed in a single file using snort.rules hence following changes done for BLACKLIST. I
am not using anything for whitelist.

My pulledpork configuration - http://pastebin.com/E4Z368rx

My rules were last updated last on 5th Oct 2013. This is my test setup.

pulledpork command: sudo perl pulledpork.pl -c /etc/pulledpork070/pulledpork-0.7.0/etc/pulledpork.conf -m
/etc/snort/sid-msg.map

My config in the snort.conf for blacklist

var BLACK_LIST_PATH /etc/snort/rules

blacklist /etc/snort/rules/snort.rules

Snort command: snort -c /etc/snort/snort.conf -i eth1

Note: Analyzing the network traffic using port mirroring

My IPVAR's:

ipvar HOME_NET [172.27.3.0/24,\

172.27.6.0/24,\

172.27.7.0/24,\

172.27.8.0/24,\

Note: I have some more subnets added this way for HOME_NET.

Rest of the configuration is as below

# Set up the external network addresses.

ipvar EXTERNAL_NET !$HOME_NET

# List of web servers on your network

ipvar HTTP_SERVERS $HOME_NET

# List of sql servers on your network

ipvar SQL_SERVERS $HOME_NET

# List of telnet servers on your network

ipvar TELNET_SERVERS $HOME_NET

# List of ssh servers on your network

ipvar SSH_SERVERS $HOME_NET

# List of sip servers on your network

ipvar SIP_SERVERS $HOME_NET

# List of DNS servers on your network

IPVAR [mentioned my DNS servers-I have multiple]

Many errors for blacklist seen some of them are as below, but there are some more.

(22) => Invalid address: 'alert udp $HOME_NET any -> any 53 (msg:"BLACKLIST DNS request for known malware domain

Reputation entries loaded: 0, invalid: 20270, re-defined: 0 (from file /etc/snort/rules/snort.rules)

My snort command test output using option -T can be found here in case you need to understand the rest of the snort
configuration for resolving this issue- http://pastebin.com/EhKMxWBx

How can these errors be fixed?

Thanks and Regards,

Anshuman
