As an update-
running snort with * -A console* *does *generate that Google alert i was
talking about.... So my best guess is that there is some problem in
communicating with mysql (either with Snort or with Barnyard?)

I tried testing my installation of Snort (with rules) with some network
traffic and with some pcap files known to contain malicious data. In either
case, Snort did not generate any alerts or block any traffic. I guess there
is some basic mistake with the way Snort is running, Here is my conf file-
http://pastebin.com/czMtYHtd. And here is the log from the terminal when
Snort begins (it looks a little strange to me so I thought of including
this)- http://pastebin.com/LinkbT2J
I know the files are quite big... Any help would be appreciated. Thanks...
