Re: Empty output (unified) files

Nick,

I've changed the paths and created test rules for downloaded pcaps. It really worked. However, there're still some
questions I have. I removed comments from sf_portscan preprocessor and slightly modified it (according to readme file)
and it looks as following:
preprocessor sfportscan: proto  { all } scan_type { all } memcap { 10000000 } sense_level { low }
But still no alerts\logs etc.
Another thing is number of rules. I've tested securityonion image which shows over 13k rules in Snort. When I
downloaded and deployed latest snapshot of rules from snort.org, I see only ~2,5k rules. Are thery any other official
ones which I may be missing?
Thank you all for help and understanding.

And here goes Snort output from its start:

ak@probe:~$ sudo /usr/local/snort/bin/snort -u snort -g snort -c /usr/local/snort/etc/snort.conf -i eth0
Running in IDS mode

Subject: Re: [Snort-users] Empty output (unified) files

Alojzy,

Where are your rules files? Also, can you include the output from when you start Snort? I wonder if it is not finding
your rule files, as your RULE_PATH variables are all at the defaults with a relative directory and you are starting
snort from /usr/local/snort/bin. Also, the sf_portscan preprocessor is commented out, so it won't trigger alerts when
you run portscans.

Some things I would recommend trying:
        * In snort.conf, set your RULE_PATH, SO_RULE_PATH and PREPROC_RULE_PATH to the directory where you put your
rule files. When I set up Snort on my system, I put them in /etc/snort and code this in my snort.conf explicitly.
        * If you still don't get any alerts after this, open one of the pcap files you downloaded from openpacket.org
using wireshark. Write a simple rule alerting on the content of the one or more packets from the pcap and put it in
your local.rules file. Make sure that local.rules is  properly included in your RULE_PATH.
        * If the above works, comment out the custom rule you've written and try snort on your network. You should be
good to go.
Happy Snorting!

Nick

I just used snapshot from snort.org website. For tests I used different scans with nmap (previously switched on
portscan alerting in snort.conf) as well as some pcaps from openpackets (https://www.openpacket.org/capture/grab/52 and
https://www.openpacket.org/capture/grab/71). Nothing returned alerts, logs etc. Just some SSL alerts, but files are
still empty.

Which rules are you attempting to alert on?

Can you provide a pcap?

No, I don't. When digging deeper and deeper into it, I'm starting to believe that it's problem with rules.

When you log using another method, do you get output?  Say -A cmg on the command line?

Hi all,

I've installed snort on Ubuntu using the official documentation on Snort website (except installing reporting tool
as I'm using snorby). When installation is completed, I wanted to test it. To my big suprise, snort is creating
unified output files, but they're empty. I was testing using nmap with intense scanning (including both TCP and
UDP) as well as LOIC, but all the files have size of zero. When I redirect output to -A console, I can clearly see
the
packets, also when I cancel snort process, in the summary I can clearly find statistics, but still nothing can be
found in the files.
Any tips and tricks will be highly appreciated.
