IDS Mode - hierarchical order

Dear Snort Users,



the snort docs say, that this will start snort in its most basic IDS form.

>  ./snort -d -h 192.168.1.0/24 -l ./log -c snort.conf

If I omit the -h subnetmask option, will snort still log reliably - but with no structure?
Or: is this parameter necessary for IDS mode?
