That works too.. but it's clearly not something you can build yourself...

If you're going to spend money, also keep in mind that a Cisco 2950 12-port 10/100 managed switch with span port capabilities (among others) retails for about $650...

The tap does have the advantage that it will flow traffic even if it fails, and adds near zero delay, but the switch is cheaper and adds useful ports.
