perfmonitor

I'm using preprocessor perfmonitor and it shows really bad values. 

I don't have tuned snorts performance but I can't believe that it is as
slow as shown.

Does anyone know whether it is necessary to use the configure option
--enable-perfmonitor to get right values from perfmonitor?

If not, what does this option do?
