That was it. The article in "Windows & .Net Magazine" (June 2004) had it
wrong.
Thanks

I am not sure about windows, but on Unix the lowercase -l defines the
logging directory, while the uppercase -L defines the log file.

Try changing your parameter to lowercase.

Hi,

Brand new user, brand new install of Snort. I am getting this when I try to
start Snort.
The directory c:\snort\log does, in fact, exist. I am the administrator on
this machine and I have full read/write/create privileges on this directory.

C:\Snort\bin>snort -L c:\snort\log -c c:\snort\etc\snort.conf -A console
Running in IDS mode Log directory = log
ERROR:
[!] ERROR: Can not get write access to logging directory "log".
(directory doesn't exist or permissions are set incorrectly or it is not a
directory at all) Fatal Error, Quitting..

C:\Snort\bin>

Windows XP, SP1 and Snort 213 Build 27

Regards,

Mike
