Compile errors w/CVS of Current on FreeeBSD 4-STABLE

Good morning,

I have a FreeBSD 4-STABLE (8/15) system that has been unable to compile the 
CVS snapshots of Current for a number of days now.  While running automake 
(v2.53), the following errors are generated:

configure.in:3: error: possibly undefined macro: AM_CONFIG_HEADER
configure.in:7: error: possibly undefined macro: AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE
configure.in:9: error: possibly undefined macro: AM_PROG_CC_STDC

Attempting to use the generated configure script with no other command 
line options generates the following:

./configure: line 1206: syntax error near unexpected token `config.h'
./configure: line 1206: `AM_CONFIG_HEADER(config.h)'

A quick search of the list archives and google shows other reports of this 
issue on both 4.x and 5.x versions of FreeBSD, but no resolutions.  Is there a 
fix for this issue?
