The next thing you may try to improve is the memory throughput, from the NICs to the RAM and RAM/CPU. That means 64Bit machines are what is coming next. ;) Using a "fast-FSB"-CPU may help too.
Or one like the recently-slashdotted[1,2] 3GHz P4 w/ Canterwood chipset, that apparently provides 2Gbps for the network interface.
