Thanks for your courageous try, been there, done that and it still
doesn't work!

The 1.8.3 installer installs alright and even starts itself but when I
test it, it gives the openpcap() error.

There isn't much more to detail though, I am using WinXp, the WinDump
identifies my device as device#1 I tried all the numbers created the
snort.conf over and over again, nadda!

Though I haven't tested it with the new one I did have
reports of success from others using WinXP and the 
1.8.3 installer.

There are some notes about WinXP on the winpcap site,
somthing to the effect of old installs can mess you up,
afair.  Make sure you ger rid of all instances of:

packet.dll
packet.sys
wpcap.dll

Which could be left lying around various parts of
your Windows folder by old installs, find and remove
these before you install...

Try various numeric interfaces too, or come back and
detail your problem in more er... detail.
