Snort Install

I am new to IDS. I was wondering if it was advisable or not to 
install snort on a firewall. Will it work? or No? Is there a reason 
why not to install it on a firewall? The firewall would be a Linux 
box running the 2.4.17 kernel. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
